He carried an extra pair of black gloves, a bottle of pure alcohol, and a large packet of cayenne pepper. The pepper was slid inside his basque, to be retrieved quickly.’
He was not above disguising his handwriting in order to have letters delivered to him during a ball, and then leaving the letters behind to confuse the enemy to his own advantage.
