Creepy Groovy: Barbie’s Incarnations
There’s something innately creepy about a plastic smile and unblinking eyes, but these sellers on Etsy have taken creepy to a whole new level. Creepy. Groovy. Yes, we stole that phrase from the wonderfully rascist Mr Wong cartoon, which isn’t for the faint of heart, much like these items.
Mutilation Mart’s “Creepy Grandpa” features a Mr Mcgoo-like head on a Barbie body, which is oh so strange, but made entirely creepy by the white undies and pet kitty. He looks rather proud of himself in his floral scarf, and we’re inclined to agree that it does bring out the roses in his cheeks.
Wilde Design’s series entitled “The Barbie Murders” features our old childhood friend Barbie in some calamitous situations–duct taped, bleeding, hanging from a noose. We’re not sure that these prints are ‘groovy’ exactly, but they are subversive, vicious, and cool.

And finally, the inspiration for this post, we present Be Elusive by G. Jarvis Jewelry.
Barbie, submerged in epoxy, seems to be drowning. Or emerging. Is she telling us to be elusive because if we aren’t, we’re sure to have our faces turned into altered art? Is she telling us, like the Spring, we are to be elusive and beautiful, like the flower of enlightenment on her forehead? Or is she merely trying to confuse us with her innocent beauty and prophetic sounding words? Profoundly confusing and provocative! Creepy, yet, oh so groovy.
